Police in Nottingham city centre have taken action against a group of individuals involved in a series of criminal damage incidents, including attempts to break into buildings and vandalism. The operation, known as Operation Reclaim, has been targeting anti-social behaviour and criminal activity in the area. A teenager has been ordered to pay £600 in compensation after damaging an entrance door at a multi-storey office block.

Incident Details and Police Response

The incident occurred on the evening of 20 April when three youths attempted to break into the Castle Heights building in Maid Marian Way by kicking the door multiple times. Although entry was not achieved, the bottom of the glass panel door was cracked and smashed. Following CCTV enquiries, officers from the City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team identified and tracked down all three male offenders, aged 13, 13, and 18. Multiple items, including phones, spray paints, gloves, torches, and balaclavas, were seized during the investigation.

Admissions and Legal Consequences

All three individuals admitted their involvement, with the group describing themselves as 'urban explorers'. These individuals are known to force entry into abandoned buildings, often diverting police resources from tackling other crimes. The 18-year-old, who caused the damage, admitted responsibility after attending a voluntary interview and was given a conditional caution. The caution includes paying £600 in compensation and completing seven hours of community work as part of an Immediate Justice programme.

Additional Incidents and Referrals

The same teenager also confessed to being part of a group that tried to gain entry to a church office building in Castle Gate by kicking doors and trying windows on 14 April. One of the 13-year-olds was also questioned and admitted spraying a CCTV camera with spray paint. Both 13-year-olds admitted spraying graffiti onto a neighbouring office building in April after more evidence was gathered by neighbourhood officers.

Community Protection Notice and Youth Justice

For his role in the vandalism series, the 18-year-old faced further repercussions beyond his conditional caution. He was also handed a Community Protection Notice Warning letter with conditions for 12 months. Failure to comply could result in a full Community Protection Notice (CPN), which is a criminal offence and can lead to court action. The two 13-year-olds have been referred to the Youth Justice Team, which will review their case and take the best course of positive action.

Operation Reclaim and Police Strategy

Operation Reclaim, launched in May, is a partnership approach to targeting criminals using the city centre to commit crime. Nottinghamshire Police are using the Home Office tactic called Clear, Hold, Build, making the environment as hostile as possible for criminals. PC Ben King of the City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team stated that businesses and the public have had enough of this behaviour. He warned that young people might think they are being clever by attempting to break into buildings but face real consequences when caught.
